The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FKG USU), has again achieved a proud milestone. Two distinguished lecturers, Dr. drg. Essie Octiara, Sp.KGA, Subsp.PKOA(K), and Dr. drg. Olivia Avriyanti Hanafiah, Sp.B.M.M., Subsp. C.O.M. (K) has successfully received simple patents from the USU Institute for Innovation, Development, and Intellectual Property (LIPIHKI) for their innovations in dental health.
Dr. drg. Essie Octiara, Sp.KGA, Subsp.PKOA(K), was granted a patent for her innovation titled "70% Ethanol Extract of Allium chinense G. Dom. Tuber as an Antibiofilm." This innovation explores Allium chinense tuber extract—commonly known as Chinese onion or chives—as an antibiofilm agent to help prevent and reduce biofilm formation on teeth, potentially lowering the risk of oral infections. Dr. Essie hopes this innovation can offer an effective solution for managing dental biofilm, a condition often challenging to treat with conventional methods.
Meanwhile, Dr. drg. Olivia Avriyanti Hanafiah, Sp.B.M.M., Subsp. C.O.M. (K) received a simple patent for her invention titled "Gel Composition of Snakehead Fish (Channa striata) Extract for Healing Tooth Extraction Sockets." This gel was developed to accelerate the healing of post-extraction dental sockets by harnessing the regenerative properties of snakehead fish. Dr. Olivia stated that this innovation could significantly benefit patient care by reducing infection risk and promoting faster recovery after tooth extraction procedures.
The Dean of FKG USU, Dr. drg. Essie Octiara, Sp.KGA, Subsp.PKOA(K) expressed pride and gratitude for the achievement. “These patents are a major step forward in research and innovation development at FKG USU and motivate the academic community to continue innovating,” she stated.
This accomplishment further strengthens FKG USU’s position as a leading center for dental research and innovation in Indonesia. It is expected to contribute meaningfully to society and the broader medical field.
