The Faculty of Dentistry of the Universitas Sumatera Utara (FKG USU) recently held an important event in the Top Scientist program series. The event invited a leading expert from the University of Hong Kong, Prof. George Pelekos, MUDr, MSc (Masaryk), MClinDent (UCL), PhD, and MFDSRCS. This activity took place on the specified date and is part of FKG USU's efforts to continue improving the quality of education and science in dentistry.

Prof. George Pelekos is an expert in periodontitis and dental implants with an impressive track record in academia and clinical practice. He holds many prestigious degrees, including a MUDr from Masaryk University, an MSc, and an MClinDent from University College London (UCL), as well as a PhD and membership in the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons (MFDSRCS).

In the three-hour session, Prof. George Pelekos presented the highly relevant and insightful topic of “Periodontitis and Dental Implants: A Complicated Relationship.” This topic addressed the complex relationship between periodontitis, an infection of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth, and dental implants, a modern solution in rehabilitating missing teeth.

Prof. Pelekos began his presentation by explaining the basics of periodontitis, including etiology, pathogenesis, and risk factors. He emphasized the importance of early detection and proper management to prevent disease progression. Next, he outlined the latest techniques in diagnosing and treating periodontitis, which can assist dental practitioners in providing the best service to their patients.

The second part of the presentation focused on dental implants, including the types of implants, insertion procedures, and possible challenges and complications. Prof. Pelekos emphasized that although dental implants offer many benefits, their success is greatly affected by the condition of the periodontium tissue. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of periodontitis is crucial to the long-term success of dental implants.

The discussion also included case studies showing how uncontrolled periodontitis can affect the stability and success of dental implants. Prof. Pelekos shared his clinical experience managing these complex cases, including effective treatment strategies and a multidisciplinary approach for optimal outcomes.

The attendees, including lecturers, students, and dental practitioners, were enthusiastic about the presentation. They gained valuable insights from Prof. Pelekos' vast knowledge and experience. The event provided theoretical learning,  interactive discussion, and Q&A opportunities, allowing participants to get clarification directly from the expert.

Prof. George Pelekos' presence at FKG USU in this Top Scientist program reflects the university's commitment to continued international cooperation and bringing leading experts to campus to enrich the knowledge and skills of students and staff. This is expected to encourage the development of dental science in Indonesia and make a real contribution to improving the quality of dental health services for the community.

This event is also expected to start further collaboration between the Faculty of Dentistry at USU and the University of Hong Kong, opening up opportunities for joint research, exchange programs, and other academic activities that benefit both institutions. Thus, FKG USU strives to become a superior and globally competitive center of dental education.
