The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FKG USU), opened the International Summer Course 2024 on September 18, 2024, at the Nazir Alwi building. This program provides a unique opportunity for students from various countries to get closer to the world of dentistry in Indonesia and explore academic life at FKG USU.
The event was attended by students from various international universities, with the main objective of introducing FKG USU as an institution offering excellent dental education in Indonesia. The Chairperson of the Committee, drg. Sefty Aryani Harahap, M.Si, stated in her speech that the event was designed to broaden international students' insights into teaching methods and clinical practice in Indonesia. “We hope this program can provide an in-depth learning experience for the participants, as well as introduce the academic culture at FKG USU,” she said.
Dean of Faculty of Dentistry USU, Dr. drg. Essie Octiara, Sp.KGA Subsp.PKOA(K), in her opening speech, emphasized the importance of this event as a means to demonstrate the excellence of education at FKG USU. She also hoped that the participants could experience a different learning experience during the program.
The opening ceremony was enlivened by the performance of the USU Faculty of Dentistry Choir and the screening of video documentation of previous years' Summer Courses, illustrating how international participants had an unforgettable learning experience at the USU Faculty of Dentistry. The participants were also invited to participate in an introductory session, which served as a starting point for them to build new relationships and share experiences.
Academic Sessions and Learning Experience at FKG USU
The International Summer Course 2024 program offers a variety of academic sessions that experienced faculty members of the Faculty of Dentistry USU will guide. Participants are invited to attend lectures and practicum sessions specifically designed to give them an understanding of the curriculum and practice of dentistry in Indonesia. With the opportunity to learn directly in the academic environment of FKG USU, these international students can gain new insights that may differ from the education system in their home countries.
In addition to academic activities, participants also had the opportunity to tour and get to know the USU FKG campus facilities more closely, ranging from laboratories to clinics where students practice directly. This visit is expected to provide a comprehensive overview of the educational standards applied at the USU Faculty of Dentistry.

More than just formal learning activities, the program is also designed to introduce international students to campus life and the local culture of North Sumatra. Social and cultural activities, such as visits to historical places and cultural performances, are expected to enrich the participants' experience and give them a broader perspective of Indonesia as a whole.
