The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FKG USU), once again demonstrated its commitment to internationalized learning by successfully organizing a Guest Lecture featuring Dr. Noor Azlina from the Faculty of Dentistry, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM). Held in the classroom of Building B, FKG USU, the event was met with great enthusiasm from students, lecturers, and dental practitioners alike.
In her lecture, “Challenges with Aesthetic Perception in Pediatric Patients,” Dr. Noor Azlina delved into the complex dimensions of addressing aesthetic perception in pediatric patients. She emphasized that pediatric aesthetics goes beyond mere appearance and involves a multidisciplinary approach that considers clinical, psychological, social, and cultural factors.
“Aesthetic concerns in children are more complex because they involve developing self-perception and the influence of their environment. Therefore, our approach must be holistic and deeply empathetic,” explained Dr. Noor. Drawing from clinical case studies and field data, she shared her extensive experience in managing pediatric patients facing dental aesthetic challenges due to trauma, congenital anomalies, or developmental conditions.
The discussion grew even more engaging with the presence of Drg. Mutia Amalia Nasution, M.Biomed., Sp.Ort., Subsp.DDPK(K) as the moderator. Her dynamic facilitation encouraged active participation during the Q&A session. Participants raised diverse questions ranging from innovative clinical techniques, effective communication with children, to how aesthetic treatment can be tailored to local cultural values. In her opening remarks, Dean of FKG USU, Dr. Drg. Essie Octiara, Sp.KGA., Subsp.PKOA(K) expressed gratitude for Dr. Noor Azlina’s visit and emphasized the importance of the topic in shaping the competencies of today’s dental professionals.
“This topic is highly relevant to the real challenges pediatric dentists face. We hope this lecture inspires and broadens the participants’ perspective in applying a more holistic approach to aesthetics,” said Dr. Essie. This Guest Lecture also served as a part of FKG USU’s ongoing strategy to foster international ties and strengthen cross-border academic collaborations, particularly in pediatric and aesthetic dentistry.
The event concluded with a group photo session and a brief reflection from participants, many of whom expressed how inspired they felt by the insights and experiences shared. Hopefully, the knowledge gained will be applied meaningfully in real-world dental practice, especially in managing pediatric patients with greater humanity and aesthetic sensitivity. With the successful execution of this program, FKG USU reaffirms its role as an active and adaptive institution that is responsive to the advancement of knowledge and committed to building global collaborations for the betterment of dental education.
